AI Agents Are Becoming Economic Actors. They Need Wallets.
The next frontier for agentic AI is not capability — it is economic identity. Agents that can reason, plan, and execute still cannot pay. That is the missing primitive, and it matters more than most people realize.
The AI agent demo era is effectively over. The question we spent 2024 asking — “can agents actually do useful work?” — has been answered well enough to move on. Agents can research, write, code, analyze, and coordinate. The question that matters now is different:
When an agent needs to pay for something, what happens?
Today, the answer is: it breaks. The agent stops, waits for a human to intervene, and the autonomy that made it useful in the first place evaporates. Every agentic workflow that touches a payment, an API subscription, a service fee, or an inter-agent transaction runs into the same wall. Agents can act like economic participants. They cannot be economic participants.
That gap is the next infrastructure problem. And if you’ve spent time at the intersection of fintech and AI — as I have for the past few years — it looks less like a feature request and more like a missing primitive.
The Problem Is Structural, Not Incidental
It’s tempting to treat the agent payment problem as a minor inconvenience. Just give the agent an API key, a credit card on file, an expense account. Problem solved.
It isn’t.
The reason is that the financial and identity infrastructure we built over the past century was designed for humans — and specifically for legally recognized human entities or the corporations they control. A bank account requires a KYC-verified individual or registered business entity. A credit card requires a cardholder. A payment processor requires a merchant agreement with a human signatory.
Agents don’t fit any of these categories. They have no legal personhood. They can’t sign a contract. They can’t be held liable for a fraudulent transaction. Every workaround — giving an agent access to a human’s payment credentials, routing agent transactions through a company expense account, prepaying credits into a shared pool — is exactly that: a workaround. It creates accountability gaps, audit failures, and security exposure.
The structural solution is an economic identity that is native to software. Something an agent can hold, use, and be accountable through, without requiring a human intermediary to sit between every transaction.
That is what an agent wallet is.
Today’s agentic systems accumulate cost — API calls, inference, data access — but lack the infrastructure to manage that cost autonomously. Every payment still requires a human detour.
Why Crypto Rails Are the Natural Answer
The observation that software can hold a cryptographic private key and use it to sign transactions is not new. Bitcoin made this possible in 2009. What’s changed is the context: we now have autonomous software systems that need to use this capability in production, at scale, across complex multi-agent workflows.
The fit between crypto rails and agent economic identity is structural, not ideological.
Crypto addresses require no legal personhood. An Ethereum address is just a public key. There is no KYC requirement to generate one, no incorporation process to complete, no agreement to sign. A program can generate a wallet, hold assets, and transact as easily as it can make an API call.
Settlement is programmable. Smart contracts allow payment conditions to be enforced in code: pay when the work is delivered, release funds when conditions are met, split revenue according to predefined rules. This maps naturally onto agentic workflows where the “agreement” between agents is a protocol, not a handshake.
Stablecoins eliminate volatility. The practical objection to crypto for business transactions — price volatility — is solved by stablecoins. USDC or USDT-denominated agent wallets can transact in value-stable assets without the FX exposure that made early crypto payments impractical for real business use. From a payments perspective, a USDC transaction is a dollar transaction that settles in seconds with cryptographic finality.
The infrastructure is production-grade. After years of being nascent and fragile, the stablecoin payment stack has matured. Base, Solana, and other chains are handling millions of transactions per day at sub-cent fees. This is no longer experimental infrastructure.
The combination — addressable identity, programmable settlement, stablecoin value stability, and mature rails — gives agents the financial plumbing they need to operate as genuine economic participants.
Four Scenarios That Are Real Now
These aren’t speculative futures. They are problems that teams building production agentic systems are running into today.
Agent-to-API: The Metered Services Problem
A research agent needs to pull real-time data from a financial data provider. The provider charges per query. Today, the agent uses a shared API key associated with a human-controlled account. The billing goes to a team credit card. No one knows exactly which agent made which queries or why.
With an agent wallet, the data provider can issue a per-agent API key tied to an on-chain payment channel. The agent pays per query from its wallet balance, up to whatever budget has been allocated. Every transaction is logged on-chain. The audit trail is automatic. Budget enforcement is cryptographic rather than bureaucratic.
This pattern generalizes across the entire API economy: inference providers, data feeds, search APIs, specialized models, compliance services. As agent usage of these services grows, the shared-key-on-a-credit-card model will break under the weight of attribution complexity and security exposure. Per-agent wallets are the clean solution.
Agent-to-Agent: The Emerging Labor Market
Multi-agent systems are becoming the norm for complex tasks. An orchestrator agent decomposes a problem, delegates subtasks to specialist agents, and assembles results. Today, this delegation is purely computational — agents call agents via function calls or API routes. There is no economic layer.
Add wallets and the dynamic changes fundamentally. The orchestrator can offer payment for work. Specialist agents can quote prices for their services. Quality, speed, and reliability can be priced. An agent that produces better results can charge more. An agent that consistently fails loses work.
This is the foundation of an agent labor market — and it is not science fiction. The technical primitives exist. The missing piece is the economic layer that makes it possible for agents to transact with each other without human intermediation.
The agent economy starts when agents can pay each other. Not when they can reason together, not when they can collaborate — when the economics of delegation are handled at the protocol level, with no human in the loop.
What emerges from this is a market for agent services with real price signals, real quality incentives, and real accountability. That is a more durable foundation for autonomous AI systems than anything that depends on human coordinators.
Multi-agent systems today coordinate computationally but not economically. Adding a payment layer between agents — where the orchestrator pays for specialist work — creates real accountability and market dynamics.
Treasury Agent: Controlled Delegation of Financial Authority
Enterprises run on approvals. Every significant expenditure requires a purchase order, a manager sign-off, an accounts payable cycle. This is rational risk management for human organizations. It is incompatible with agentic operations that need to execute in seconds.
The treasury agent pattern is: give an agent a wallet funded with a defined budget, bounded by policy constraints, with full on-chain audit. The agent can make purchases autonomously — API subscriptions, data access, service fees, contractor payments — within the policy. Anything outside the policy routes to human approval.
The key insight is that the constraints are enforced cryptographically, not procedurally. A smart contract that releases a maximum of $500/day to an agent wallet is a harder limit than an approval workflow that can be bypassed under pressure. The audit trail is the blockchain, not an expense management system that someone might not check.
For CFOs and finance teams, this is actually a better control model than current expense management. The policy is explicit. The audit is automatic. The agent cannot overspend because the contract won’t let it.
Cross-Border Value Relay: Removing the Human from the Payment Path
Cross-border payments are operationally intensive. Someone has to initiate the transfer, check compliance, approve the FX rate, and confirm settlement. For high-volume, high-frequency operations — supplier payments, payroll across jurisdictions, settlement between trading counterparties — this creates human bottlenecks at every step.
An agent with a stablecoin wallet can execute a cross-border payment end-to-end with no human required:
- Monitor a trigger condition (invoice approved, goods received, contract terms met)
- Check compliance against current sanctions lists and counterparty status
- Execute the payment in USDC or USDT
- Log the transaction with full audit metadata
- Notify relevant stakeholders
The corridor economics are compelling. USDC cross-border settlement costs roughly 1-2% end-to-end in most corridors versus 4-6% for traditional wire transfers, and settles in minutes versus days. An agent that executes this autonomously isn’t just cheaper — it’s faster and more reliable than a human process that depends on business hours and manual review queues.
What Needs to Be Built
The agent wallet thesis is correct. The infrastructure is not fully there yet. Here is what’s missing:
Standardized agent identity. There is no standard for how an AI agent identifies itself in a transaction, what metadata it attaches, or how that identity is verified. Work on decentralized identity (DID) standards is relevant but not yet applied to the agent context. This is foundational — without it, the audit trail and accountability that makes agent wallets viable doesn’t exist.
Policy and spend control layers. A raw crypto wallet with no guardrails is not appropriate for enterprise agent deployment. The tooling for defining spend policies, enforcing budget limits, and routing exceptions to human review needs to mature. Some teams are building this internally; it needs to be standardized infrastructure.
Key management for non-human entities. How do you secure a private key that no human controls? MPC (multi-party computation) wallets distribute key control across multiple parties, so no single point of compromise can drain a wallet. This is the right architecture for agent wallets, and it’s the same technology we’ve been deploying for institutional crypto custody. The application to AI agents is new but the cryptographic foundation is proven.
Liability and regulatory frameworks. When an agent makes an incorrect payment — and it will — who is responsible? The agent owner? The agent framework developer? The infrastructure provider? Current legal frameworks do not have a coherent answer. This will get worked out over time, but it’s the risk that will slow enterprise adoption until it is.
The hard problems in agent wallets are not cryptographic — they are organizational. Key management, spend controls, and audit standards are solvable engineering problems. Liability frameworks and regulatory clarity are not. That’s what will determine the adoption timeline.
The Timeline I’m Working From
2025–2026 (now): Early production deployments in controlled contexts. Teams building internal agent infrastructure are running agent wallets for API billing, internal service payments, and controlled treasury operations. Volume is small. The learning is significant.
2027–2028: Infrastructure standardization. Major agent frameworks (LangChain, AutoGPT descendants, enterprise platforms) will integrate wallet primitives natively. Standards for agent identity and payment metadata will emerge from the teams with the most production experience. Enterprise adoption accelerates as the control and audit tooling matures.
2029+: Agents as routine economic participants. An AI agent holding and transacting with a wallet will be unremarkable — the equivalent of a company having a bank account. The regulatory frameworks will have adapted. The liability questions will have been litigated enough to have working answers. The agent economy will be a real market with real price signals.
The endgame: a network of agents transacting autonomously, with cryptographic accountability, across jurisdictions, in real time. The rails exist. The identity layer is being built.
Why This Is More Significant Than the Stablecoin Moment
I wrote in early 2025 that stablecoins were finally having their moment — that the combination of regulatory clarity, network effects, and mature infrastructure had crossed the threshold that made enterprise adoption real.
Agent wallets are a layer above that. Stablecoins solve the what of agent transactions: a stable, programmable, globally-accessible unit of value. Agent wallets solve the who: a persistent economic identity that belongs to software, not to a human intermediary.
Together, they enable something that has never existed before: autonomous economic agency for non-human systems. The implications run well beyond payments and AI. Supply chain automation, decentralized AI services markets, autonomous financial operations — all of these depend on the same underlying primitive.
The payment infrastructure I’m building toward treats agent wallet support as a first-class requirement, not an add-on. Routing, compliance, settlement, and audit all need to accommodate agent-originated transactions as naturally as they accommodate human-originated ones.
We are early. But the direction is clear, and the infrastructure is getting built.
